Maymont's resident bobcat Monty dies at 18
Monty, Maymont's beloved bobcat and wildlife ambassador, was humanely euthanized after age-related health issues.
Monty, the resident bobcat at Richmond's Maymont park, has died at the age of 18, WRIC reported. NBC12 added that Monty was humanely euthanized after age-related health concerns began to affect his quality of life.
Maymont's veterinarian shared that Monty received exceptional care throughout his life, including ongoing veterinary treatment to support his mobility and comfort as he aged. The difficult decision to euthanize him was guided by his quality of life.
Monty came to Maymont in 2008 after being found as a kitten in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. Initially mistaken for a domestic cat, a veterinarian identified him as a bobcat, and after rehabilitation at the Wildlife Center of Virginia, he was made a permanent resident at Maymont because he was too accustomed to humans to be released into the wild.
Over the years, Monty became a popular attraction at Maymont, allowing generations of visitors to see a native Virginia species up close and learn about bobcats. He was known for his curious personality, vocal greetings, and enthusiasm for food and enrichment activities.
Bobcats typically live 10 to 14 years in the wild and 18 to 20 years in human care, making Monty's lifespan notably long. His keepers noted his talkative nature and the special attention his habitat required due to his habit of trying to eat inappropriate items.
