Miami Beach man arrested after 19 dogs found in unsanitary home with elderly woman
Miami Beach police rescued 19 dogs and an elderly woman living in deplorable conditions at a North Michigan Avenue residence.
Miami Beach police arrested a 50-year-old man after discovering 19 dogs living in severely unsanitary conditions alongside an elderly woman during a welfare check, CBS News Miami reported.
Officers responded to a home on North Michigan Avenue to assist the Florida Department of Children and Families with the welfare check, where they found 15 adult dogs and four puppies in deplorable conditions, including puppies inside a contaminated cooler, according to WSVN 7News.
The home was described as having holes in the floor and ceiling, broken windows, and widespread feces, posing significant health and safety concerns for both the animals and the elderly resident, Miami Beach Police spokesperson Christopher Bess said.
Miami-Dade Animal Services safely removed all the dogs and transported them for veterinary evaluation and medical care. The Miami Beach Building Department deemed the residence unsafe for occupancy and issued a vacate order, CBS News Miami noted.
The man, identified as Jorge Morillo, acknowledged responsibility for the dogs during a recorded police interview and faces animal cruelty charges. Police emphasized their commitment to preventing animal cruelty and protecting vulnerable residents.
Miami Beach Police Chief Wayne A. Jones highlighted the coordinated effort among city departments and community partners in responding to the situation and ensuring the welfare of both the elderly woman and the animals.
