Deputies in Volusia County responded Saturday morning to a report of a toddler wandering near a retention pond in Deltona. According to WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando, deputies found the 4-year-old child waist-deep in the pond, wearing only a diaper, and safely retrieved him without injury.

Upon locating the child's home, deputies encountered an open door and an overwhelming smell of feces and urine. FOX 35 Orlando reported that inside, they found unsanitary conditions including animal waste, a roach infestation, and mold. A caged dog was also discovered living in its own excrement.

The child's father was present when deputies arrived at the home, while the mother was at work and returned after being contacted. Deputies noted the poor state of the residence, with feces and urine on walls and kitchen surfaces, and black mold in the refrigerator and bathroom.

According to WKMG, the father cited a full-time work schedule and financial difficulties as reasons for the home's condition. Both parents were arrested and charged with child neglect and animal cruelty. The child's grandfather took custody, and the Florida Department of Children and Families was notified for follow-up.
