Russell Brand's defense and prosecution deliver closing arguments in rape trial
Russell Brand denies multiple sexual offense charges as trial enters final stages with closing statements.
Russell Brand is facing trial on charges including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault, all of which he denies, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The trial involves allegations from six women concerning incidents between 1999 and 2009. Brand's defense lawyers emphasized that the accusers did not resist or try to leave during the alleged attacks, as reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
In closing arguments, Brand's defense lawyer argued there is no evidence that Brand is "some kind of psychopath who rapes people and thinks it’s normal," stating Brand believed all encounters were consensual, according to Variety.
The defense also highlighted Brand's behavior, including leaving contact information and photographs with one complainant, as inconsistent with typical rapist behavior, Variety reported.
The prosecution countered by describing the defense's case as "a lot of half-truths, but spun into lies," and urged the jury to consider the accusers' consistent accounts and lack of motive for publicity, per the Hollywood Reporter.
The jury, composed of eight men and four women, is set to deliberate following these closing statements at Southwark Crown Court, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
