Schneider National shifts eastern rail partner to Norfolk Southern for network boost
Schneider National plans to switch from CSX to Norfolk Southern as its main eastern rail carrier starting January 1, aiming to enhance intermodal service.
Schneider National announced it will change its primary eastern U.S. rail partner from CSX to Norfolk Southern beginning January 1, according to Supply Chain Dive.
The company’s CEO, Jim Filter, highlighted that this shift is part of efforts to improve the network and capitalize on tightening capacity in the market.
Filter noted that the potential merger between Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific could be strategically beneficial for Schneider, opening opportunities to convert truckload shipments to intermodal freight.
Schneider has already seen growth in its intermodal segment after partnering with Canadian Pacific Kansas City in 2023, which improved service and reliability between the Upper Midwest and Mexico.
A competitive advantage for Schneider is that it owns its containers, chassis, and drayage drivers, along with 35 years of intermodal experience, which appeals to shippers seeking reliability and financial stability.
