Driver admitted to drinking before fatal Wilson e-bike crash, court records show
A Wilson man admitted to drinking four alcoholic beverages before a crash that killed two on an e-bike.
New court documents reveal that a 22-year-old Wilson man involved in a fatal crash admitted to consuming four alcoholic drinks about an hour before the incident, WRAL reported. The crash occurred on September 24 on Tilghman Road when the man's vehicle struck two people riding an electric bicycle, killing both at the scene.
According to the affidavit obtained by WRAL, the driver acknowledged drinking four Twisted Teas with his last drink between 3 and 4 a.m., roughly an hour before the crash. The responding officer noted a moderate odor of alcohol and observed signs of impairment, including glassy eyes and positive preliminary breath test results.
Despite these observations, the driver has never been charged with driving while impaired but faces two counts of second-degree murder and felony death by motor vehicle charges, CBS17 reported. He was arrested and released on a $1 million secured bond, with a grand jury hearing scheduled for December 17.
The driver told police he was returning from a convenience store approximately three miles from the crash site and also disclosed taking several medications. The case is being prosecuted by the North Carolina Conference of District Attorneys, while the Wilson County Sheriff's Office is not involved in the investigation due to a conflict of interest.
