LIV Golf shutting down after plans for new league fall through
LIV Golf will begin liquidating assets after failing to secure financing and player support for LIV 2.0, lawyers said in bankruptcy court.
LIV Golf is officially shutting down operations following the collapse of its plans for a restructured league called LIV 2.0, according to statements made by the league's attorneys during a bankruptcy court hearing in New Jersey on Thursday, as reported by Yahoo Sports.
The league's lawyers explained that LIV Golf was unable to secure sufficient financial backing and player commitments necessary to support the new league, leading to the decision to wind down operations and liquidate assets. This was confirmed by Matthew Williams, an attorney for LIV Golf, who described the liquidation as the best path forward.
The private equity firm BC Partners Credit withdrew its $300 million offer to support LIV 2.0, citing the failure to reach mutually acceptable terms among stakeholders and insufficient player commitments for the 2027 season. This withdrawal left LIV Golf without the necessary funding to continue.
LIV Golf's creditors committee is scheduled to meet on November 20, with another bankruptcy hearing set for November 24 to discuss the ongoing proceedings. The league will begin the official liquidation process starting Monday, aiming to maximize value for creditors.
The shutdown marks the end of LIV Golf after five years and over $5 billion in expenditures, highlighting challenges in sustaining a financially viable golf league under the LIV brand.
