Family-run massage businesses in Ventura County convicted of sex trafficking and money laundering
Four family members convicted for running illicit massage businesses used as fronts for commercial sex and laundering over $1.25 million.
A Ventura County jury convicted four members of a family-run operation that authorities say used local massage businesses as fronts for commercial sex and money laundering for more than a decade, KTLA 5 reported.
The investigation began in 2020 after law enforcement received tips alleging prostitution and human trafficking at Miracle Massage in Ventura and A+ Massage in Port Hueneme, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors identified Xiangwei Ma, her husband Ming Ma, her brother Xiangdong Ma, and her sister Li Ma as operators of the commercial sex enterprise. They recruited women from China to engage in commercial sex acts and moved proceeds through financial institutions, life insurance policies, casinos, and real estate transactions.
The operation generated substantial profits over several years, with more than $1.25 million in assets forfeited. The four family members received prison sentences for operating illicit massage businesses, exploiting women, and laundering proceeds. A fifth defendant, Jamie Calderon, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to Ventura County Jail for laundering proceeds.
Senior Deputy District Attorney Rikole Kelly said the convictions send a strong message that communities will not tolerate commercial sex markets and those exploiting others will be held accountable.
