Some weight loss drug users report painful skin sensitivity
Tampa Bay patients using GLP-1 weight loss drugs report burning skin sensations doctors are studying.
WFLA 8 reported that some users of weight loss medications known as GLP-1 drugs, including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, have reported a painful skin condition called allodynia. This condition causes normally harmless sensations, such as a light touch or breeze, to feel painful.
The Daily Mail noted that while allodynia is not officially listed as a side effect of these medications, multiple medical reports have documented cases where patients on GLP-1 drugs developed skin sensitivity. The condition appears to be dose-dependent, with symptoms often emerging or worsening when doses are increased.
A woman taking tirzepatide, a GLP-1 medication, described her experience as feeling like a sunburn without visible redness, where even light contact with her skin was uncomfortable. Her doctor confirmed other patients have reported similar symptoms.
The National Library of Medicine has reported several cases of burning sensations linked to GLP-1 drugs, with symptoms typically resolving within weeks to months after stopping or reducing the medication dose. Medical experts advise patients experiencing these symptoms to consult their doctors for guidance.
