Virginia Tech beats Clemson 20-16 with late touchdown pass
Virginia Tech won against Clemson 20-16 after a late touchdown pass from Ethan Grunkemeyer to Luke Reynolds.
Virginia Tech defeated Clemson 20-16 on Saturday night in Clemson, South Carolina, marking Virginia Tech's first win over Clemson since 2007, according to Live 5 WCSC.
The winning touchdown came on a 5-yard pass from Ethan Grunkemeyer to tight end Luke Reynolds on fourth and 1 with 1:44 left in the game. Grunkemeyer completed 20 of 32 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
Virginia Tech's coach James Franklin said he considered a field goal to tie the game but decided to go for the fourth down conversion due to the tough road environment and his team's struggles running the ball.
Clemson quarterback Tait Reynolds completed 20 of 26 passes for 153 yards and scored a 16-yard rushing touchdown. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney called the fourth down call by Franklin 'a gusty call' and acknowledged his team did not do enough to win.
The late scoring drive by Virginia Tech was aided by two Clemson pass interference penalties and a late hit out of bounds, which resulted in three first downs for the Hokies.
Swinney noted the referees were very active during the game but said the outcome was ultimately on the coaches and players, stating they did not do enough to deserve the win.
