Susan Paisner, a 76-year-old Maryland woman, competes in four to five triathlons each season, according to WTOP. She began triathlon racing after turning 59 when a friend gave her a racing bike, which inspired her to take on the sport.

Paisner recently finished 11th in her age group at the World Triathlon Age-Group Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, completing the event in 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 35 seconds. She said the biking portion was difficult due to gear issues, but she was proud to finish and not come in last.

Triathlons involve swimming, cycling, and running in one day and are considered among the most demanding endurance competitions. Paisner said competing gives her pride and she sees herself as representing older women and senior citizens who can stay active.

Though technically retired, Paisner balances training with freelance work and credits her health to good genetics and careful training. She noted that starting triathlons later in life changed how she views her body and fitness.

Paisner’s story highlights the possibilities for active aging in the DC area, encouraging seniors to pursue physical challenges and maintain health through endurance sports.
