Casselberry residents debate peacock protections over property damage
City leaders consider changes to bird sanctuary rules after peacocks cause damage in Lost Lake subdivision.
Peacocks have been roaming parts of Casselberry for decades, but some homeowners in the Lost Lake subdivision say the birds have become an expensive nuisance, according to WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando and FOX 35 Orlando.
Residents reported that peacocks have damaged vehicles, pool enclosures, and lawns, and raised concerns about droppings, loud calls, and repair costs, FOX 35 Orlando reported. Some residents want the city to remove peacocks from the ordinance that currently protects them.
At a city workshop, residents voiced opposing views. Some want the peacock protections maintained, while others seek changes to the ordinance to better protect their property, FOX 35 Orlando said.
City officials said they need to consult with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission before considering any changes. No decisions were made at the workshop, and no timeline was announced for further discussions, according to FOX 35 Orlando and WKMG News 6 ClickOrlando.
