In the 2026 midterm elections, South Carolina voters contributed to a national shift as Democrats gained control of both chambers of Congress, according to Live 5 WCSC.

Democrat Dr. Annie Andrews won the U.S. Senate seat, becoming the first woman and first Democrat in nearly three decades to represent South Carolina in the Senate, ABC News 4 WCIV reported.

In the gubernatorial race, Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson secured victory after Democratic state Representative Jermaine Johnson conceded, WCIV noted.

The 1st Congressional District race remains too close to call, with Democrat Nancy Lacore and Republican Jenny Costa Honeycutt likely headed for a recount, according to WCIV.

These results reflect a broader national trend described as a 'blue tsunami,' where Democrats flipped multiple Republican-held seats, including in traditionally red states like South Carolina, Live 5 WCSC explained.

The new Democratic majorities are set to take office in January, potentially impacting legislative agendas and investigations, as noted by Live 5 WCSC.
