San Francisco voters pick Scott Wiener over Connie Chan for Congress
State Senator Scott Wiener wins San Francisco's House seat with 55% of the vote, showing strong support in Castro and Pacific Heights.
San Francisco voters selected state Senator Scott Wiener as their new House representative, with 55% of the vote, according to the San Francisco Standard. Wiener outperformed Supervisor Connie Chan, who had stronger support in Chinatown and the Outer Sunset neighborhoods.
The election results revealed clear demographic and geographic divides. Wiener received his strongest backing in the Castro and Pacific Heights, areas that tend to be mostly white and higher-income. In contrast, Chan did better in predominantly Asian precincts and nearly matched Wiener in lower-income neighborhoods.
The election also highlighted shifting political dynamics. Chan underperformed in traditionally progressive areas like Bernal Heights, where a Democratic Socialist candidate had previously secured 60% of the vote in a supervisor race two years ago.
In addition to the congressional race, San Francisco voters showed increased support for Sunset Dunes Park, rejecting Proposition G by 65%. This proposition would have reverted the park back to a highway on weekdays. The precincts adjacent to the park voted 58% against the measure, continuing their preference to keep the park as public space.
These election outcomes illustrate the complex political landscape in San Francisco, with divisions along income, race, and neighborhood lines shaping voter preferences.
Looking ahead, the results may influence local and state political strategies, especially in neighborhoods with shifting allegiances and evolving priorities.
