Spider-Man: Brand New Day drives Sony Pictures to 527% profit increase in Q2
Sony Pictures Entertainment's second quarter profit rose 527% year-over-year, fueled by Spider-Man: Brand New Day's box office success.
Sony Pictures Entertainment reported a significant increase in its second quarter profit, rising 527% compared to the same period last year, according to Deadline.
Variety detailed that the blockbuster film Spider-Man: Brand New Day was the primary driver behind this surge, contributing to a 37% increase in sales to $3.23 billion and operating income of $488 million for the quarter ended September 30.
The theatrical revenue for Sony Pictures Entertainment reached $1.28 billion, an elevenfold increase from the previous year, largely due to Spider-Man: Brand New Day along with horror titles Insidious: Out of the Further and Resident Evil.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opened wide on July 31, became the third-highest grossing movie in history with a global box office total of $2.52 billion this summer, trailing only Avatar and Avengers: Endgame, Variety reported.
Sony's overall revenue for the quarter was 3.429 trillion yen ($21.5 billion), up 10%, with net income increasing 44% to 450 billion yen ($2.8 billion).
The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Zendaya as MJ, and Sony Pictures Entertainment's CEO described it as a very human and emotional story, beyond a typical superhero film.
