Three suffer chemical burns after margarita mix-up at Forest City Chili’s
Chemical degreaser mistakenly used in margaritas at Chili’s in Forest City caused burns to customers and employees.
Three people experienced chemical burns after drinking margaritas at a Chili’s Grill & Bar in Forest City, North Carolina, health officials reported. The incident occurred when a chemical degreaser was mistakenly used in place of sugar at the margarita station.
Officials said the degreaser was placed in an unlabeled container by a contracted worker power washing the restaurant exterior. An employee later found the container in the bar area and assumed it contained sugar, using it to prepare margaritas.
Two restaurant employees also suffered chemical burns after trying the margaritas, according to the ForestHills Health District. Those affected sought medical help after experiencing discomfort and burns in and around their mouths.
Health officials immediately suspended the restaurant’s food service permit and instructed staff to thoroughly clean and sanitize all affected areas and equipment. The permit was reinstated on October 29 after safety measures were confirmed.
Chili’s acknowledged the incident and said they are investigating the circumstances while prioritizing the health and wellbeing of guests and team members.
This incident highlights the importance of proper labeling and handling of chemicals in food service environments to prevent similar accidents.
