Washington DC elects democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George as mayor
Janeese Lewis George's win makes DC one of four large US cities with socialist mayoral leadership.
Washington DC has elected Janeese Lewis George, a democratic socialist, as its new mayor following the recent midterm elections, Breitbart News reported. This election places Washington DC among four of America's largest cities now governed by socialist mayors.
According to Fox News, the four cities with socialist mayors include Washington DC, Los Angeles, Seattle, and New York City. Together, these cities are home to approximately 14 million people. The election of George in DC follows similar outcomes in Los Angeles, where Nithya Raman defeated the incumbent mayor.
Breitbart News noted that the impact of socialist leadership in these cities could extend beyond city limits, affecting neighboring suburbs through changes in crime rates, real estate values, and the overall business climate. Suburban residents who work in these cities may also experience direct effects.
The report also referenced comments from former President Donald Trump in 2019, expressing skepticism about socialism's sustainability in governance despite its appeal in campaigns. He warned that while promises like free medical care and education are attractive, they could lead to economic difficulties over time.
