A U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Savannah rescued five people and a dog from a commercial shrimping vessel near the Winyah Bay jetties on October 28, 2026, WCBD reported.
According to Live 5 WCSC, the shrimping vessel, named Shayna Michele, began taking on water and grounded on the jetty. The crew contacted Coast Guard Sector Charleston watchstanders around 12:50 p.m. for assistance.
A Coast Guard Station Georgetown boat crew was diverted to help, and the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew hoisted the five people and the dog to safety. Emergency medical personnel evaluated the rescued individuals at a local airport, and no injuries were reported.
Lt. Hunter Shortly, aircraft commander at Air Station Savannah, said the rescue was challenging due to the vessel's many wires and cables, but the crew worked well together to ensure everyone's safety.
The cause of the incident is under investigation. The vessel’s owner is cooperating with the Coast Guard to salvage the shrimping vessel.
