Tamarius Davis was sentenced to 50 years in Florida state prison for the 2021 second-degree murder of Dustin Wakefield, a 21-year-old tourist who was shot in Miami Beach while protecting his 1-year-old son, WSVN 7News reported.

The shooting occurred in August 2021 when Davis approached Wakefield and his family at a Miami Beach restaurant, pointed a gun at the child, and then shot Wakefield five times as he stepped in front of the weapon, according to CBS News Miami.

During the sentencing hearing, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Laura Stuzin acknowledged the difficulty of the case and noted that Davis was under the influence of mushrooms and experiencing a psychotic episode at the time, but said the crime was preventable and reflected deeper issues Davis never addressed, WSVN 7News added.

Davis pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in May 2026 and remained silent as the judge announced the sentence, which includes 50 years in prison plus probation, CBS News Miami reported. Prosecutors had sought a life sentence, while the defense requested no more than 25 years.

The victim's family gave emotional testimony during the trial and expressed that only a life sentence would be just, though they also stated forgiveness for Davis, according to CBS News Miami and WSVN 7News. After the sentencing, Wakefield's mother shared a message of peace in the courtroom hallway.

Davis' defense attorney said the case had no happy ending and that both families suffered tragedy, while the judge emphasized that Davis had hidden a dark side and could have sought help before the shooting, WSVN 7News reported.
