Matthew Weiner leaves Eddie Murphy's Peacock series The Chairman over creative differences
Matthew Weiner has exited as showrunner of Eddie Murphy's series The Chairman due to creative differences, with a new team to be announced soon.
Matthew Weiner has departed as showrunner of the Peacock drama series The Chairman, which stars Eddie Murphy, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety. The exit was attributed to creative differences between Weiner and the show's producers, among whom Murphy is included.
The Chairman is produced by Universal Television and 101 Studios, the latter run by David Glasser, known for Yellowstone. The series is also the first project under Chris McCarthy's overall deal with NBCUniversal, marking his involvement in the studio's relationship with 101 Studios.
The writers' room for The Chairman has been paused for two weeks during the transition to a new showrunning team, which will be announced shortly. The series is still in development, and exact plot details have not been disclosed.
If picked up to series, The Chairman will mark Eddie Murphy's first live-action TV regular role since his time on Saturday Night Live in the early 1980s. Murphy is also serving as a producer on the project.
Matthew Weiner is recognized for his work on acclaimed series such as Mad Men and The Sopranos, having won multiple Emmy Awards. His departure from The Chairman comes as the show seeks new creative leadership to continue development.
