The Miami Marlins have exercised a $21 million option on pitcher Sandy Alcantara, preventing him from becoming a free agent, WSVN 7News reported. This decision guarantees Alcantara a total of $75 million over six years, based on a deal agreed to in November 2021.

Alcantara, a 31-year-old right-handed pitcher, finished the recent season with a 13-11 record and a 3.87 ERA in 33 starts and three relief appearances. This was his second season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

The Marlins chose to pay the $21 million option rather than a $2 million buyout, signaling their commitment to keeping Alcantara on the roster. This move contrasts with other players like Michael King, who became a free agent after declining a player option, as reported by WSVN 7News and WPLG Local 10.

Alcantara's retention is significant for the Marlins as they look to maintain a strong pitching staff following his solid performance last season.
