Early voting turnout breaks records across North Carolina ahead of Election Day
More than 2.8 million North Carolinians voted early in 2026, surpassing 2022's total by nearly 700,000 ballots.
Early voting in North Carolina concluded with record-breaking turnout, exceeding figures from the previous midterm election cycle, WITN reported. More than 2.8 million ballots were cast early statewide in 2026, a significant increase from just over 2.1 million in 2022.
Voters in eastern North Carolina, including areas near Elizabeth City, showed high enthusiasm and steady participation at polling sites, according to WITN. Election boards in the region reported turnout increases ranging from 20% to 45% compared to the last midterm.
In Onslow County, officials noted that early voting surged from 20,000 voters in 2022 to over 31,000 in 2026, a jump that exceeded their expectations. Officials also observed that voters are engaging more with down-ballot races and constitutional amendments.
The increased participation reflects a growing awareness among voters of the impact elected offices have on their daily lives, extending to municipal levels, according to election officials cited by WITN. Thousands more ballots are expected to be cast on Election Day to complete the final tally.
