Sacramento County Public Health announced the first influenza death of the season on Wednesday, FOX40 reported.

The individual who died was a woman in her 50s with underlying medical conditions and was not vaccinated against the flu, according to the county health agency.

Sacramento County Public Health Officer Dr. Phuong Luu emphasized the seriousness of the flu and encouraged residents to get vaccinated, stating that vaccination remains the best defense against severe illness and death.

In addition to vaccination, the health department recommended other preventive measures to reduce the spread of influenza among the community.

The report serves as an early reminder for Sacramento area residents to take flu prevention seriously as the season progresses.
