Sacramento drive collects political signs to turn them into art
SMUD board member Gregg Fishman organizes a collection to repurpose durable political yard signs into creative artworks.
Sacramento Municipal Utility District board member Gregg Fishman is organizing a collection drive to turn corrugated plastic political yard signs into art, FOX40 reported. Fishman, recently re-elected to the SMUD board, noted that these signs are durable and weatherproof but not accepted for recycling after elections.
Fishman was motivated to find a sustainable use for the signs after realizing their disposal options were limited. He connected with Shira Lane, CEO of the Atrium in Old Sacramento, an art shop focused on creative and sustainable projects, which uses the signs as canvases for community art workshops.
The Atrium has decorated its exterior for holidays like Halloween and Day of the Dead using art made from the yard signs. Lane said the signs can be transformed into various creations, limited only by imagination. The shop will also feature decorations made from repurposed signs for the winter holidays.
Fishman’s annual sign collection drive allows artists, teachers, students, and hobbyists to pick up or drop off signs at a designated time and place after Election Day. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m., providing an easy way for Sacramento residents to contribute to the project.
