Beckham and Philip Simmons win volleyball state championships
Lucy Beckham and Philip Simmons volleyball teams each secured state titles in Columbia, while Wando finished as runner-up.
Two Charleston-area volleyball teams, Lucy Beckham and Philip Simmons, won state championships at Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina, according to Live 5 WCSC. Beckham claimed their first-ever 4A state title by defeating Nation Ford 3-2, overcoming a two-set deficit to win the final two sets.
Beckham's head coach Adria Elliott highlighted the team's balanced play, while senior Sophie McLean said the team fought through early nerves to achieve the victory. Meanwhile, Philip Simmons secured their second consecutive 2A state championship by beating Liberty 3-1. Their coach, Jay Watterworth, credited the team's experience and teamwork.
The day ended with Wando competing in the 5A championship match but losing 3-1 to Woodmont. Despite winning the first set, Wando lost momentum, and coach Alexis Glover expressed pride in her team, especially the seven seniors who have reached the finals multiple times but finished second this year.
These results mark significant achievements for Charleston-area volleyball programs, with Beckham making history and Philip Simmons continuing their recent success. Wando's strong season also reflects the competitive level of volleyball in the region.
